How to Stay Calm & Reduce Anxiety Amidst a Crisis (6 Useful Tips)

Today I want to share with you 6 tips for staying calm amidst a crisis – like the current coronavirus crisis.

The current pandemic sweeping our nation and world is influencing us in ways we could have never imagined. For many of us, our mental and emotional health are taking the hardest hits. However, there are things you can do to ease these pains and feel better during this time.

Whether you found this post because of the Coronavirus Pandemic of 2020, or it is at a later time and something else has happened, I hope this brings you some peace and comfort during an unsettling time. Please share with others who may need to see this.

How to Stay Calm & Reduce Anxiety Amidst a Crisis (6 Useful Tips)

1. Stop Checking

Whether this means stop checking the local news, the national news, Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter – just stop checking. Checking only elevates levels of anxiety during a crisis and is mostly unnecessary. Set aside certain times during the day to check but do so on trusted sites such as health organizations, etc.

2. Practice Deep Breathing

Breathe deeply in through your nose. Let your stomach fill with air. Breathe forcefully yet calmly out through your mouth, making a sound as you do. Repeat this as many times as necessary until you feel calmer.

3. Exercise

We all know that exercise decreases anxiety and depression and also increases serotonin levels. So, get to working out! It doesn’t have to be outside the home. Download the “8Fit” app or a similar app and do 15-20 minutes of exercises in your living room. Getting your blood flowing and breath going will help reduce your anxiety and panic.

4. Surround Yourself with Others

Now is not the time to isolate yourself. Be around others (as much as possible), especially those you love and trust. They can help to comfort you and make you feel better and possibly lighten the mood. Do not be alone during this time.

5. Eat Healthy

Healthy eating is so important for not only physical, but emotional and mental health. Eat as healthy as you can right now. Try getting in at least 2-3 servings of fruits and vegetables every day (even if they are canned) and limit processed foods for as long as you can. Drink plenty of water as well.

6. Get Good Sleep

Now is the time to use that bedtime tea you haven’t touched for so long…or the eye mask you have on your dresser. Do whatever you can to get the best sleep possible. It will help “reset” you overnight & will ensure that your mental levels are balanced and refreshed. As always, talk to your doctor if none of these are helping or you keep feeling worse.

Take Aways

Whatever it is you are experiencing, I hope that it passes soon, friend. Remember: you are not alone, no matter how lonely these times may feel. I wish you all the best.
