Fall Capsule Wardrobe for Moms Over 30: The Ultimate Guide | 2020

If you’re anything like me, the last thing on your mind at any given moment is what outfit you are going to wear during the next “occasion” that requires an actual outfit.

You’ve got your mind on your children, your house, your husband, your family, your friends, and pretty much everything except your clothes.

I’ve got you covered, mama! I decided to list out every single piece of my fall capsule wardrobe (covers winter too) so that you can see exactly what you will need in yours.

I have found items that are either the same or very similar to the ones I have in my closet for my fall capsule wardrobe right now.

These pieces are particularly for moms over 30 – they are not revealing, they aren’t too “trendy,” and they are simple & easy (but still stylish), because the last thing a mom over 30 needs in her life is something that is complicated.

So, grab your Pumpkin Spice Latte and get ready for some cute fall capsule wardrobe pieces that you can shop right from your phone or computer!

Oh, one thing before we get started – these are a few of my recent posts that I think you will just love – they are all fall-related, so perfect for this time of year:

Now, let’s get to it!

Fall Capsule Wardrobe for Moms Over 30: The Ultimate Guide | 2020

Let’s Talk Capsule Wardrobes

I’ve been a fan of the “capsule wardrobe” for a couple years now – and thank goodness. It’s seriously saved me so much of my sanity it’s not even funny!

what is a capsule wardrobe

Definition of Capsule Wardrobe:

According to thegoodtrade.com, a “capsule wardrobe” is “a practice of editing your wardrobe down to your favorite clothes (clothes that fit your lifestyle + body right now), remixing them regularly, and shopping less often and more intentionally.”

Three things to note about my capsule wardrobe:

  • I have (2) capsule wardrobes: one for fall/winter and one for spring/summer
  • I don’t include my workout clothes in my capsule wardrobe (these are clothes I wear typically several days a week, and I simply buy new ones whenever the old ones wear out)
  • I don’t include jewelry in my capsule wardrobe (I wear the same jewelry every day – I can do a post on this if you’re interested!)
what should be in a fall capsule wardrobe

So here’s what I include in my fall/winter capsule wardrobe:

  • (4) pairs of pants (jeans can be included in this)
  • (2) dresses
  • (5) plain tops
  • (4) sweaters
  • (3) jackets
  • (3) scarves
  • (3) pairs of shoes (boots included)

Based on the formula from this website, that is a combination of 608 different possible outfits! This is why I love capsule wardrobes.

Fall Capsule Wardrobe: The Essentials

For 2020, let’s start with the essentials for fall, which I consider to be tops & pants. If you have nothing else, make sure you have tops & pants!

Fall Capsule Wardrobe: PANTS (4)

My favorite place to get pants is Target. I have been shopping for my pants (and jeans) at Target for 3 years now and just absolutely love them.

The quality is superb, the fit is perfect, and there are enough styles that pretty much anyone can find something they like!

I especially love their colored jeans (my favorite is plum).

Let’s talk style for a minute, when it comes to pants. I do not always keep up with the “current style.” In fact, I often try to avoid it! I like to consider my wardrobe “classic,” if it has a name.

I try my best to find pieces that will last through the years, even if they are somewhat expensive, so that they outlast all the “trends.”

For example: I prefer to get a non-ripped pair of dark jeans for my capsule wardrobe rather than a ripped or bell-bottom style jean (because both of these will only be in style for so long).

So, here’s what I got for my capsule wardrobe for pants this year:

1. Women’s High-Rise Skinny Jeans – Universal Thread™ Dark Wash

These jeans are classic. You can’t go wrong with a high-rise pair of skinny, dark wash jeans!

2. Women’s High-Rise Skinny Jeans – Universal Thread™ Medium Wash

These are basically the same as the previous pair of jeans, just with a medium wash. Love them!

3. Women’s Mid-Rise Skinny Jeans – Universal Thread™ Olive

This next pair of pants is another I have, in the olive green color. I love the button detail & the fact that I can spruce up my outfit a little by wearing something other than blue jeans!

4. AG Farrah High Waist Skinny Jeans Plum

Lastly, these are the perfect fall-colored jeans from AG (Nordstrom Rack)! I love them. Super comfy and the fit is perfect. Looks great with practically any other color!

Fall Capsule Wardrobe: TOPS (5)

I’ll be honest, the majority of this capsule wardrobe will probably be from Target! It’s pretty much the only place I shop for clothes these days (hello, affordability & style!) – other than Amazon, Nordstrom Rack, and occasionally Old Navy & Gap.

As far as tops are concerned, I try to stick with (mostly) very basic tops as they can always be enhanced by jewelry, scarves, or jackets.

These are my favorite tops for this fall capsule wardrobe season:

1. Women’s Long Sleeve V-Neck Fitted T-Shirt – A New Day™ Rust

This top just spoke to me when I first saw it. Something about the fit & the absolutely gorgeous rust color! I fell in love immediately & had to have it.

2. Women’s Ribbed Long Sleeve Knit Top – Knox Rose™ Wine

I love this top too. It’s super casual but also very beautiful. It has a very nice feel to it, too. Love it!

3. Women’s Long Sleeve Waffle T-Shirt – Wild Fable™ Burgundy

You can probably tell by now what my “style” is – super simple, super laid back, but super cute & stylish. Perfect for a mom. This shirt is no different! I love the color & fit of this one.

4. Women’s Puff Long Sleeve Button-Front Blouse – Universal Thread™ Yellow

I’ll be honest – I am most excited about wearing this top this fall and winter season! I am so glad I found this one to add to my fall capsule wardrobe! How cute is this?

5. Women’s Puff Sleeve Sweatshirt – Universal Thread™ Rust

This is the top where I went outside of my comfort zone a little when purchasing. This color is not typically a color I would get – it’s a little too bright for my taste – but I decided to give it a shot. We will see!

I love that this top is actually a sweatshirt – and is simply dressed up by the puff sleeves!

Fall Capsule Wardrobe: Sweaters & Dresses

You can’t possibly have a successful fall capsule wardrobe without some good, quality, cute, sweaters & dresses. I mean, seriously.

My favorite place to buy my fall and winter sweaters is Banana Republic. I typically will buy them (years when I actually need new ones) in the late winter when they are having a massive sale trying to get rid of all of their sweaters.

The sweaters I currently have (I will show you similar ones) I got two years ago and they were all a good 50-75% off. Can’t beat it!

Fall Capsule Wardrobe: SWEATERS (4)

As far as sweaters for my fall and winter capsule wardrobe are concerned, I do pretty much the same thing with them that I do with my tops: keep them simple, neutral/dark tones, and maybe have one or two that is a little brighter than the rest.

My favorite quality to find in a sweater: breathability (is that even a word?)! I am super hot-natured, so really thick sweaters are typically a no-go for me.

1. Banana Republic Puff-Sleeve Sweater Top Camel

This first sweater is one I do not have, but desperately want. It’s the only one on this list that is not similar, in style, to any others I have. That’s mainly because the puff sleeve just came out as “trendy” this year.

So, I may have to snag one of these during their late winter sale for next year!

2. Banana Republic Washable Merino Dolman-Sleeve Sweater Apricot Sorbet

These sweaters I have plenty of. Really. I don’t need sweaters for years because I have so many of this style!

What I like about these is their simplicity & versatility. You can dress them up or down, whichever you prefer, and they look classic, elegant, and beautiful.

They have about four colors of these sweaters, and my favorite for this year is the apricot sorbet.

3. Banana Republic Boat-Neck Sweater Top Gray

I absolutely love this boat-neck sweater they are carrying right now! I have one that is similar, with a little less of a boat-neck, that I absolutely adore.

These sweaters are super soft, not itchy or scratchy at all, and hold up very well in the wash (as long as you wash on delicate and hang dry). Love them!

4. Banana Republic Washable Merino Color-Block Sweater Red Wine

This sweater is the one that I purchased this year that went a little outside of my typical “classic-neutral” comfort zone – but I love it.

I love that it can be dressed up or down, and honestly I haven’t ever seen a raglan-style color block sweater like this before! It is absolutely gorgeous, even more so in person.

Fall Capsule Wardrobe: DRESSES (2)

For dresses, like many other things you will learn, I like to keep it super simple. I am a big fan of a simple dress with accessories (like a jacket, scarf, and shoes) that make it come together as an outfit.

Again, the two dresses I have for my fall and winter capsule wardrobe were purchased a long time ago – probably eight or so years ago now.

They have both held up amazingly – one is from Old Navy and the other was from Macy’s.

These are the dresses similar to the style I own that I would choose from this year’s picks.

1. Old Navy Plush-Knit Long-Sleeve Swing Dress for Women Wine Purple

I absolutely love my dress that is similar to this one. It is lightweight (I have a tendency to be warm-natured so can’t have anything too heavy, even in the fall/winter season) and super comfy and flowy.

Mine is more of a burgundy color but this wine purple is just a delight! Perfect for fall!

2. Old Navy Waist-Defined Rib-Knit Tie-Belt Midi Dress for Women Coco de mer

I couldn’t quite find another dress that was exactly like the second one I have, but this dress is pretty similar.

It’s a button up dress (super cute!) with a tie-belt and it is slightly ribbed. Hello comfort, hello fall! I love the Coco de mer color, too!

Fall Capsule Wardrobe: Jackets & Shoes

An outfit just isn’t an outfit without the proper accompanying jacket and shoes – especially when it comes to fall and winter!

I typically rotate out three different jackets within my fall capsule wardrobe, and three different pairs of shoes.

Fall Capsule Wardrobe: JACKETS (3)

For fall and winter jackets, these are the three kinds I make sure to always have for my capsule wardrobe:

  • a Jean Jacket (doesn’t matter the color of the jean)
  • a Puffer Jacket
  • a Cardigan (okay, not really a jacket, but still in the same general category)

As far as where I go to find these jackets (places where I know the quality is great and the jackets will last me a long time), I typically shop at Nordstrom or Nordstrom Rack for my jean jackets, Columbia or Land’s End for my puffer jacket, and Gap or Banana Republic for my cardigan.

Here are the jackets I currently own that are in my fall capsule wardrobe, or they are similar to the ones I currently own.

1. KUT from the Kloth ‘Helena’ Denim Jacket Empathetic

My current jean jacket looks almost identical to this one, but it is a Levi’s denim jacket.

However, I will say, I own several pairs of shorts from KUT from the Kloth and they are an amazing brand – amazing! Their quality is unlike any other. Their customer service (for the time I got the wrong size) is on point. Seriously, you can’t go wrong with this brand.

I love that they have several different color options to choose from – I love the white color for spring and summer!

2. Columbia Women’s Heavenly™ Long Hooded Jacket Olive Green

The second kind of jacket I have to have in my fall capsule wardrobe is this puffer jacket. I live in San Diego so we have mostly mild falls and winters, but there is a period of two months or so early in the year where it is cold!

I love wearing this jacket with anything from workout clothes to something really dressed up! It’s super comfy and definitely does a good job of keeping you warm without being too bulky.

3. Banana Republic Responsible Merino Long Cardigan Sweater Camel

I always have to have a cardigan in my fall and winter capsule wardrobe – always.

My favorite cardigan ever is this one purchased many years ago from Banana Republic. I love the camel color because it honestly goes with anything!

Fall Capsule Wardrobe: SHOES (3)

I’ll be honest: I have turned into a “shoe snob” over the years. But let me explain why.

I have bunions – yeah, I know, kinda gross – but it is what it is. I have learned through the years that I have to get a specific kind of shoe in order to be comfortable in it all day long.

My favorite brands, because of this, are Brooks, Birkenstock, and ABEO (found at The Walking Company).

Despite their appeal to people like me with less than ideal feet, their shoes are all super cute, stylish, and in style! I always find what I’m looking for with these three places.

1. ABEO PRO Elda Chocolate

The first style of shoe I like to have in my fall capsule wardrobe is an ankle-high lace up style boot like this one.

What I love most about this boot? The fact that it wears like the most comfortable tennis shoe you’ve ever owned. Seriously. Couple with the fact that it actually goes with the rest of my wardrobe, it’s a win-win.

2. ABEO B.I.O.system Nevis Neutral Dark Tan

The second kind of shoe I like to have in my wardrobe is a more simple ankle-bootie type shoe, like this one.

I love this one because it is light weight and breathable, but still perfect for fall and winter. And it goes with everything else I’ve listed here!

3. Dansko Odina Leopard Suede

The third style of shoe I like to get is nothing more than a good flat like this one.

I hate having to pay a lot for a good flat – but let me key you in on something: if you find a high quality brand, you will only have to re-purchase the shoe about every 4-5 years. So it pays for itself over time!

This one is my favorite because it is leopard print – a little outside of my comfort zone, but super cute and stylish. Goes with everything, too!

Fall Capsule Wardrobe: Accessories

Accessories are everything, am I right? Really. In order for an “outfit” to be an “outfit,” it must be accessorized.

However, just like with everything else, I like to keep my accessories super simple, too.

Most of my scarves I get from Target or Amazon, and my jewelry (which I know, was not included in the fall capsule wardrobe list, but I still want to include in case you’re looking for something similar) I get from smaller boutiques or Nordstrom and sometimes from Amazon.

Fall Capsule Wardrobe: SCARVES (3)

While I may not be the biggest fan of scarves (because they sometimes get on my nerves being around my neck), I still accessorize with them and think they are so so cute!

These are three scarves that are very similar in style to the ones I currently own (which I can’t link because I purchased them years ago).

1. YOUR SMILE Ladies/Women’s Lightweight Shawl Scarf Leopard

Honestly, I love leopard print – anything. My phone’s case is leopard print, I have leopard print shoes, leopard print slippers – and the list goes on and on.

This scarf is no different! This one is one of my faves because I feel like it’s a good scarf to dress up a neutral colored top or sweater. I love that it’s lightweight, too.

2. Women’s Plaid Oversized Square Scarf – Universal Thread™ Cream

I also love to have a good quality (and slightly bulkier) cream-colored scarf to pair with my darker colored tops and sweaters, like this one.

I love that there is a very subtle plaid print to this one! So perfect.

3. MIMOSITO Lightweight Scarfs for Women Orange

This last scarf is similar to one I own, but is a slightly different color.

I’ve noticed this year that orange is trending – and I have to say, I love that!

This is perfect for wanting to add a pop of color to an otherwise neutral palette.

Fall Capsule Wardrobe: JEWELRY (no specific amount)

Like everything else, I like to keep my jewelry simple. I love a simple gold necklace and gold earrings – and occasionally will sport a simple gold bracelet. That’s it! That’s all I wear for jewelry.

Here are a few of my favorite pieces that I wear almost every day, whether it’s summer, spring, fall, or winter!

These would be a perfect addition to your fall capsule wardrobe:

1. Kate Spade New York One in a Million Initial Pendant Necklace

This necklace is almost identical to the one I wear every day. I love anything by Kate Spade (is there anyone who doesn’t?) and know that she provides the highest quality, always.

2. Kate Spade New York Shine On Gold Earrings

The earrings I wear every day are very similar to these. You really can’t go wrong with a high quality stud earring – ever. These would compliment any one of the pieces I’ve shared with you today!

3. Pernnla Pearl Dainty Gold Bar Bracelet for Women

Lastly, I like to add a bracelet to my jewelry from time to time (mainly for bigger occasions when I’m dressing up a little more) and this one is divine. I love the simplicity!

This would go great with any of the previous items I’ve listed for you today!

I’d never heard of a capsule wardrobe before reading this, but it totally sounds like what we are trying to do. We’ve gotten on the minimalist bandwagon and I’d love to really get my closet down to essential clothes that I can re-purpose easily with other outfits. Thanks for all of these tips! Pinning for later!

What a great concept! With everything going on this year, I have let my wardrobe and clothing needs fall to the bottom of the to-do list. This idea might help things along though!
